References

  • SpongeBob SquarePants - Stephen the Gopher was named after the late creator of SpongeBob SquarePants, Stephen Hillenburg.
  • Caddyshack - This episode is named after the 1980 comedy movie Caddyshack. The episode also features a dancing gopher, like in the movie, as well as a plot point involving gopher hunting.
  • Dan Vs. - Some of the moments are similar to the Dan Vs. episode "Golf". Both episodes feature a character voiced by Dave Foley (David and Chris) playing golf.
  • Scarface - When Marty prepares for golf, he says "Better stand back, get out of my way, I'm coming up strong like a burning flame!", which is a reference to the song "I'm Hot Tonight" from the 1983 movie Scarface, which was sung by Marty's voice actress, E.G. Daily.
  • Jack Nicklaus/Jack Nicholson - Carly says to her husband that he's like the equivalent of the golf player Nicklaus Nicholson, a reference to famous actor Jack Nicholson and golf player Jack Nicklaus, who both share the first name and have similar second names, which spawned jokes about Jack Nicholson playing golf.
